Class of 2016 - Assemblies

Over the last 4 or 5 weeks, grade 7 tutor groups have been presenting a topic of their choice in our weekly assembly slot. We started during British Fortnight with 7A showing us some of the traditions of the countries of the British Isles, including "cheese rolling" and "black pudding throwing".

7B followed on with an assembly on the weird and wonderful technologies in existence, or nearly in existence, in our world today.

Next up was 7D and a Canadian Music festival.

And finally 7C showed us a wide range of winter sports practised in Canada. (apologies that the photos are quite dark)

Class of 2016 - Trip to Boqueron

Grade 7 students enjoyed an outdoor classroom on their recent trip to El Boqueron Park. The park is located inside the crater of San Salvador Volcano and is part of the El Salvador and La Libertad volcanic mountain chain.

With the help of their geography and science teachers, the students learned more about the rock cycle, made field sketches, and classified plants. Some students tested the soil and tried to make links between the soil pH and the types of plants growing in it.

Class of 2016: FUNPRES workshop for girls

(para ver esta información en Español favor hacer click en "FUNPRES Workshop for girls - Spanish" en el menú)

On the 26th October we had a Parent Partnership Evening where we presented our life skills program. Our program is delivered in various ways and we consider it as an integral aspect of our student’s life as part of our vision of producing Responsible Outstanding Citizens.

In this meeting, we had the opportunity to listen to Lic Delia de Ávila, who is the director of FUNPRES, presented the different workshops that we have organized for secondary girls. These workshops will begin next week.
The objective of the workshops is to empower girls on how to develop with integrity within the different environments: family, social, and school. At the same time, we want our students to become role models of positive coexistence.

The first workshop entitled “Effective Communication” will be held in groups according to year groups on the following dates:

For Grades 6o, 7o, and 8o – Tuesday 16th November 2:30 – 4:30pm
For Grades 9o, 10o, 11o, 12o - Thursday 18th November 2:30 – 4:30pm

This is a new initiative by the ABC and it is voluntary and free of charge. Having said that, we expect your support to motivate your daughters to sign up for the workshop. We are sure they will be of great benefit for themselves and the ABC community.

Please complete and return the reply slip sent out yesterday no later than Friday 12th November to Marielos Soto.

Class of 2016 - Poverty day and Life Skills

On October 19th, grade 7 spent the morning looking at the issue of Poverty as part of our Awareness of Issues theme in Life Skills. The day started in the PAC with an introductory session and then students went to 4 sessions run by grade 12 students. In these sessions they looked at various aspects of poverty, including education, war and conflict, diet and technology. The grade 12s had worked hard to ensure that the sessions were fun and interactive, as well as educational and the grade 7s appreciated this.

This week is UN Week and grade 7 have been spending Life Skills sessions looking at the work of the United Nations in various countries throughout the world. As this year is the UN International Year of Youth, we looked specifically at how the work of the UN can help children and young people. On Friday students can come to school wearing a T-shirt from any country around the world, or of an International event. They should bring $1 which will be donated to local charities. In addition many have already purchased their tickets for the UN lunch - tomorrow is the last day to bring the $2.

After half-term, COESAL will be delivering 4 sessions to grade 7 students on the topics of Self-Esteem and Eating Disorders. You will find out more about this at the Parent Partnership meeting tonight (6.30 in the PAC), but the main areas will be:
Autoestima. Me siento bien conmigo.
-Autoestima y autoconcepto.
-¿Qué afecta?¿Qué provoca?
-Autoestima: negativa-alta-sana.
-Estrategias.
-El valor de ser yo.

Desórdenes alimenticios. Tú y tu cuerpo.
-¿Cómo me veo?¿Cómo me siento?
-Definiciones
-Presión de cánones ¿te afecta?
-Distintas complexiones
-Estrategias

Cal 1 comes to a close in November, and your child's report will be ready for collection at the Parent-Teacher meeting on December 2nd. This will be an ideal opportunity for you to discuss your child's progress with his/her teachers and we would encourage you to speak to as many of them as possible.

See you at the Parent Partnership meeting tonight.
